Abstract

This text presents a follow-up of the journalistic management that El País, a regional newspaper from Cali, Colombia, gave to forced displacement events that took place in Colombia from 1994 to 2005. This was presented in the context of a research project about “The social representations that university students construct of forcibly displaced people in Cali (2012- 2014)”. This text aims to identify the elements that characterized the journalistic management given by the Cali newspaper El País to forcibly displaced people, with the objective of reflecting on how do media represent themselves as key actors in the construction of public problems. KEYWORDS: Mass media, forced displacement, social representations, public policies.

Carmen Jimena Holguín, Universidad Autónoma de Occidente Cali

She is a social worker and has a Master’s Degree on Public Policy by Universidad del Valle. She is a student working on a thesis for the Master’s on Society, Gender and Politics FLACSO Argentina. She is a full time professor at Universidad Autónoma de Occidente Cali, and a member of its Research Group on Conflicts and Organizations.

Hernando Uribe Castro, Universidad Autónoma de Occidente de Cali

Social Sciences Graduate, Master’s Degree on Sociology and Doctor on Environmental Sciences by Universidad del Valle. Full time professor at Universidad Autónoma de Occidente de Cali and a coordinator of its  Research Group on Conflicts and Organizations.

Germán Ayala Osorio, Universidad Autónoma de Occidente de Cali

Journalist and Social Communicator by Universidad Autónoma de Occidente.
